After graduating from Georgia State University in 2015 with a Bachelor’s degree in psychology and a specific concentration in community psychology, Van entered the University of South Carolina’s Clinical-Community doctoral program in 2016. Broadly, his research interests revolve around examining risk and resilience behind the clinical, psychosocial, and educational outcomes among ethnic minorities and other disadvantaged populations. Working with Dr. Bret Kloos, some of the research and applied work Van is currently involved in includes examining contexts of recovery in the wake of disaster, addressing homelessness through mesosystem change, and providing resources to better integrate those with serious mental illness back into the community. Other topics that interest him include empowerment, positive youth development, and civic engagement. In his spare time, he enjoys a wide variety of activities, ranging from binge-watching Netflix, playing board games, and reading to going to the gym, hiking, and travelling.
