Alex RobertsDepartment of Psychology
University of South Carolina
Alex is a second-year doctoral student in the School Psychology program. He graduated summa cum laude from Newberry College in 2015 with B.A. in psychology and a minor in English; he also lettered four years as a pitcher on the baseball team. Alex is co-mentored by Drs. Nicole Zarrett and Mark Weist. Currently in progress, his master’s thesis examines the construct validity of a measure evaluating social motivational orientations to sport in middle school youth. Alex is an active member of two teams at USC: the Promoting Leisure Activities in Youth (PLAY) team and the School Behavioral Health Team (SBHT). He has also worked with Dr. Kate Flory at the Parenting and Family Research Center (PFRC) examining biological responses to stress (salivary cortisol) in children with ADHD and comorbid symptomology (i.e. conduct disorder, emotion regulation). Additionally, Alex currently co-leads therapy groups for adolescents with multiple diagnoses at William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute. His primary research interests include the development of empirically- and school-based mindfulness interventions that aim to mitigate elevated stress levels in teachers. Clinically, Alex is interested in the evidenced-based assessment of adolescents and young adults with internalizing symptoms. Outside of academia, Alex spends most of his time travelling and lifting weights.
